WHY STUDENTS CHEAT
The problem of why students cheating are a big dilemma in our society now a day. Many educational institutions or private colleges have been facing for years. It is an old misconduct that students bring since they were in elementary school because nobody wants to be the second in the class. There are many organizations that have done research to prove the amount of students that cheat. They have found much kind of reasons why students feel the necessity to commit fraud.
“ According to Gary Niels ’ most young people cheat at least once in their high school career’,3 Top Reasons Why Students Cheat”. Primary, most of the students who cheat by copying from other students, they do not do it because of lack of knowledge .They do it because they do not want to put enough effort in their studies or just because they don’t have enough time to prepare for the exam. So when a student is caught cheating it can cause them to lose all credibility with the professor and most of the time an “F” automatically. Sometimes the professor don’t follow the institution policy and bring the students another opportunity. It is also the origin of a big problem because they are lying to themselves thinking that they have learned sufficient to demonstrate their ability when they have to work in the field.
Another factor to take into consideration is that student may cheat when they are under stress. Some students have Full-time School, work at the same time as a part time and also have family obligations. This excess of duties and responsibilities causes loss of efficiency and capacity to finish the schoolwork. That’s why is important to avoid all kind of problems and concentrate on the major issue and not worry about other things. The lack of interest in some students about a subject because they do not like is another reason why they cheat. Many teachers avoid proctoring, I suspect, because they believe that it might endanger their relationships with their students. They assume that separating desks or walking up and down the aisles indicates suspicion; therefore, they refrain from these actions, fearing that they might damage the trust they seek to build between themselves and their students.

But teachers must ask themselves if they are achieving success by overlooking cheating. If teachers do not take precautions to prevent it, they are cheating their students as well as themselves.

The teacher's responsibility was stated bluntly by one student, who said: ''First and most important, teachers must recognize that, yes, it is a student's responsibility not to cheat or to allow others to cheat. But it also is the teacher's responsibility to reduce the temptation and all the opportunities to cheat.''

Teachers who worry about proctoring should heed the student who said, ''Rather than not trusting the student, you are merely taking away the temptation.''

Providing insight into both the causes and prevention of cheating is the student who wrote: ''It is Friday and many of the kids have three or four tests. It is certain that, since there has been too much to study for, there will be a lot of cheating going on today.

''It is often difficult to keep history dates and mathematical formulas in one's mind at the same time without getting the numbers mixed up. Because of this, we must sympathize with the students; but this sympathy must not allow the teacher to condone cheating.

''The type of test and the teacher's actions in the classroom during the test can reduce the temptation to cheat. True and false and multiple-choice tests are the easiest type to make up and grade. But these tests are so easy to cheat on that they tempt even the most ethical student.

''Tests containing essay questions are almost impossible to cheat on because they test each student's individual knowledge and understanding of the subject. These tests allow a student to think and sort things out in his mind.''

The buying and selling of research papers have received attention recently. To combat this, some teachers accept papers from students only if they are accompanied by note cards, outlines and rough drafts that have been checked by the teacher during the progress of the assignment. In addition, footnotes, which the student is also required to submit, are checked for plagiarism against the original sources,

Obviously, checking footnotes is tedious and time-consuming. But school boards and administrators truly concerned about cheating will not begrudge class loads small enough to give teachers time for this onerous but necessary chore, or the alternative: a lay reader. While not a panacea, checking sources can deter plagiarism.

Yet, these measures against cheating, while helpful, are not a total solution, as pointed out by the student who, in reply to my question of what could be done to prevent cheating, answered this way:

''Basically, what has been done in the past: close supervision and punishment. Even better would be to instill a morality about cheating. Teach children why it's wrong to cheat so that they won't cheat. The present attitude of ''tearing up the paper'' can never remedy the problem, as a basic philosophical or moral change can.''

One student suggested a way to bring about a positive morality. As he put it: ''First of all, you must try to build up students' confidence. Let them know that they can do things on their own without the help of outside sources. Cheating can also be reduced by having smaller classes and spacing students apart during exams.

''Once students know that it is physically difficult to cheat, they will start to do the work they have to in order to pass. They will find that they are capable. They will gain self-confidence in their abilities and won't cheat.''

Instilling morality, while desirable, is difficult and cannot be done by teachers alone. Parents, too, have an important role, especially since the groundwork for moral values is laid in the home.

Some cheating is so blatant, especially on homework, essays and research projects, that teachers often find it hard to imagine that parents can be unaware of the copying going on. They wonder if the cheating done in school is a reflection of what the student has learned at home.

Consequently, teachers sometimes hesitate to brin g a student's cheating to t he attention of the paren ts for fear of not b eing supported or, even worse, of finding themselves attacked b y parents.

Parents might be surprised at the number of students who cited parental pressure as the cause of cheating. Typical is the student who said:

''In an age where society depends heavily upon the education of its children and puts enormous pressure on them to succeed, students often feel desperate. At times, it's not easy to live up to the expectations of your parents, friends and school administrators.

''You worry, panic and resort to the 'easy' way out. It's a world of survival, and if survival means cheating on the tests or exams, then so be it. The consequences can be dangerously enormous; but if undetected, a student could easily slide by and keep his parents, teacher and school administrators happy''

Parents who plead ignorance of their children's assignments are guilty of condoning cheating by not fulfilling their parental responsibilities. And even more obviously, parents who demand high grades of their children, while neglecting to explain the importance of the knowledge itself, are guilty - intentionally or not - of not only condoning cheating but also contributing to it.

It is difficult to inculcate moral values in children unless adults themselves - parents and teachers - exhibit these values. As one of my students pointed out: ''American society values winners, the people who are the best, and in school that means having the highest grades possible. It's all a question of how much you are willing to sacrifice for this, and at what cost.''

But do we value winners at the expense of honesty? Does cheating reflect a pervasive dishonesty and cynicism in American culture? Are we adults so afraid of being the gullible dupe, the only one that plays by the rules, that we are afraid to profess our own belief in truth, duty and honor?

One thing is certain: The problem of cheating will not be solved until we adults who believe it is wrong are willing publicly to announce our opposition. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Janet S. Johnston, a high school teacher, lives in Westfield.
